Farming in Australia

Working as a Cowboy or Cowgirl on an Australian farm in the Outback offers maybe the most intense nature experience possible.  Housing accommodations, meals, and good wages are all included.

You could expect to help with all areas of the farm.  For example, you could work with the animals like the sheep or cattle or even with the horses but machine maintenance is also possible.

A job at a farm consists of some hard manual labour but most of it takes place in the open air and so it is necessary that the workers have high fitness and good stamina.  Above all it’s great to see people that already have strong manual skills.

You should prepare yourself, that depending on the season you could often find yourself working more than 8 hours a day and also working on the weekends.

There is also a job for those that are ready to get their hands dirty and work an unforgettable outdoor adventure in the unending Australian desert and experience the time of your life.

Fruit Picking

Fruit picking is popular among backpackers because it is a less common area of work in Australia but nevertheless it brings many young people from all over the world together and it creates a unique working environment where young people can meet and interact.

Working as a harvest hand also pays you in a financial respect.  The payment is regular and after a couple of weeks of fruit picking one could fill up their travel funds.

The work is definitely hard and strenuous and so it questions ones’ fitness and endurance.  It is also be very possible that you could have to work ten days in a row and an 8-hour-day in the Queensland heat can feel very very long…

But then when you are sitting around a camp fire with your friends at night or when you are spending a sunny day at the Great Barrier Reef, you know that it is all worth it.

Waiter

Australia’s big cities offer many opportunities and possibilities to make money quickly.  Whoever can boast of some practical experience has the clear advantage.  And whoever has already worked as a waiter will certainly have a multitude of job offers.

In Sydney for example, one could be situated in the trendy quarter of The Rocks, lying in the shadow of the Harbour Bridge, where the hippest bars of all the big Australian cities.

Sheep Shearing

Have an incomparable experience in wide open nature:  Help and learn the life of living on a sheep farm!

Sheep shearing is exactly like any normal job on a farm in that it requires hard physical work.

Therefore endurance and fitness are very important aspects that you would need to be able to bring to your work.

Next to the shearing you could also work on driving the sheep in and out or also you could work with the sorting of the wool.

Hotel Receptionist

A positive attitude is the most important requirement for this job because handling tourists with friendliness is the corner stone to tourism.  Your job would be to greet and register the guests like that of a concierge, a helpful attitude concerning questions and problems and also the handling of telephone calls would be needed.

An apprenticeship is not necessary but it would of course boost one’s chances.  However, English and previous knowledge would be very helpful.

It is not always possible to live at one’s work place therefore good payment and the offer to sleep at the nearest hostel is always a good choice.

These types of jobs can be found across the nation.  Certainly pay attention to the high and low season times.  Work groups and time can also vary.  Shifts and service on the weekend and holidays are also common for this branch of work.
